What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes any situation that requires immediate dental care to save a tooth, stop ongoing tissue bleeding, or alleviate severe pain. Common dental emergencies include severe toothaches, chipped or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, abscesses, and bleeding gums.

What’s the best way to handle a dental emergency?

When navigating a dental emergency, the first step is to call Johansen Dental immediately. We make every effort to see you the same day. 

In the meantime, there are some things you can do to ease the pain and minimize the impact. For severe pain, apply a cold compress to the cheek near the affected area. Rinse with saltwater. If bleeding occurs, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth. If necessary, take acetaminophen for pain relief.

What should I do if I have a knocked out tooth?

If you have a knocked-out tooth, immediate action can increase the chances of saving the tooth:

1. Pick up the tooth by the sides. Avoid touching the delicate roots.
2. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with water. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments.
3. Try to reinsert it in the socket and hold it in place by gently biting down. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk or saliva.
4. Come to Johansen Dental as quickly as possible. The sooner you get to us, the better the chances of saving your tooth.
