What is the process for getting a dental implant?

The procedure for dental implants typically involves several steps designed to ensure a successful outcome with a functional and aesthetically pleasing replacement for missing teeth:

1. Initial Consultation:
   • Comprehensive examination of your oral health.
   • Discussion of your medical history.
   • X-rays and 3D images may be taken.
   • Creation of a personalized treatment plan.
2. Preparation:
   • If needed, tooth extraction is performed.
   • Bone grafting is done if the jawbone is not thick enough.
3. Implant Placement:
   • The dental implant, a small titanium post, is surgically inserted into the jawbone.
   • Then, the implant site can heal and integrate with the bone, a process known as osseointegration, which can take several months.
4. Abutment Placement:
   • Once healed, you will come in for us to place the abutment onto the implant, which will hold the artificial tooth.
   • Further healing time is allowed for the gum tissue around the abutment.
5. Artificial Tooth Placement:
   • After the gum tissue has healed, impressions of your mouth and remaining teeth are made.
   • The final tooth (crown) is then attached to the abutment.
6. Follow-up and Care:
   • Regular check-ups are scheduled to monitor the implant, abutment, and crown.
   • Proper oral hygiene and care are essential for the longevity of the dental implant.
   • Each step is crucial for ensuring the implant is securely integrated into the jaw and provides a strong, stable foundation for the new tooth.

What types of dental implants exist?

1. Endosteal Implants. These are the most common types of implants, suitable for patients with a healthy jawbone to support the implant. Placed directly into the jaw, they usually consist of small titanium screws that provide a strong foundation for one or more artificial bones.
2. Subperiosteal Implants. These implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone and are commonly used for people who don’t have enough healthy jawbone and don’t want to get bone grafting.

Outside of these standard implants, we also offer implant-supported dentures for those missing one or both of their entire rows of teeth.
