  • What is laughing gas and what does it do?

Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that can help reduce your anxiety. It will not put you to sleep. It’s colorless and odorless and its usefulness stems from its ability to quickly work and safely reverse its effects. It is a widely considered safe dental sedation method.

We offer nitrous oxide for our patients to ensure they are comfortable and relaxed for any procedure.

  • What type of anesthesia are used for dental work?

The most common types of anesthesia used are local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is a numbing medication that is injected directly into the area that is to be treated—usually the gums around an affected tooth. In contrast, general anesthesia produces a more profound experience that usually leaves no memory of the actual procedure. It’s typically used for more intensive procedures like tooth extraction, dental implants, or other surgical procedures and the patient is unconscious during the process. IV sedation is a deeper type of anesthesia that achieves a period of brief sedation with very little memory of the surgery.

  • What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It can range from mild sedation to deep sedation, depending on the patient’s needs and the complexity of the procedure.

  • What are the side effects of laughing gas?

Side effects of laughing gas are rare but can include dizziness, nausea, and headaches. These side effects are usually mild and short-lived.

  • Can I drive after receiving laughing gas at the dentist?

It is generally recommended to wait until the effects of laughing gas have completely worn off before driving. This usually takes only a few minutes, but it is best to wait until you feel fully alert and back to normal before operating a vehicle.

  • What are oral sedatives in dentistry?

Oral sedatives are medications taken by mouth to help patients feel relaxed and calm during dental procedures. They are often prescribed in pill form and are taken before the dental appointment.
